Multi-Fuel Or Wood Burning

Choosing your stove is a decision that must be made

based upon the fuel you plan to use. When all factors

are considered, a clear choice usually emerges, and

in this article, we'll discuss the pros and cons of each option.

A wood-burning stove burns wood and only wood. A multi-fuel stove burns both wood and solid fuels. Wood burns optimally on a bed of ash with air circulating from above and a wood burning stove does not have a grate, so you burn on the bottom of the stove. The grate of a multi fuel stove allows air to circulate from underneath, which is necessary for burning solid fuels. The grate also allows ashes to drip through the grate into an ashpan underneath, which allows for easier cleaning and increased airflow. The grate can also be used to burn wood, but not optimally. However, in our experience, wood is more than satisfactory when burned on a grate. A multi-fuel stove is generally slightly more expensive than its woodburning equivalent due to the addition of the grate and ashpan.

This depends largely on how you intend to use the stove and what fuel you have access to. While wood burns beautifully, it is quick to burn and is not always as practical as solid fuel. For those with access to woodland and the time and space to prepare and store logs for burning then a woodburning stove could be a good, cheap option but if you only have space to store a few bags of kiln dried logs then a woodburner can soon become expensive.

Solid fuel, while less pleasing to the eye to burn, harder to light, and less responsive to changes in burning temperature through the stove's air controls, holds its heat much longer and is therefore more practical if you frequently use your stove. For those wishing to overnight burn then you have a much greater chance of achieving this with solid fuel.

In our opinion most people would be better suited buying a multi fuel stove and burning both wood and solid fuel simultaneously. This way you get the benefits of both fuel types. Make your choice below, Our PANADERO range are all multifuel contemporary stoves.
